ORIGINS OF ASSAULT RIFLE
World War II was the bloodiest war the world has ever known. During the war, new weapons capable of unthinkable devastation would emerge. From advanced chemical warfare to the U.S. dropping of the atomic bomb, World War II broke all barriers between combat on the battlefield and a secure civilian population. Perhaps it is almost poetic then that it is during this terrible and great war that assault rifle was first used.
While many other countries tried to create an assault rifle, it was the Germans who succeeded. The weapon found its way onto the battlefield in the 1940's. The Strumgewehr, called the STG 44, or assault rifle shot 400 meters or (1,300)fps. on average with the capacity to fire 500rpm. Firing as standard 30 round magazine, the Nazis used this weapon for two years before it was replaced. |
